Oris Kodjoe (Damon Carter) had backgrounds in other areas of entertainment. The chemistry between the actors resonated with fans who embraced the television show despite the change in personnel. “Soul Food” never depended on the addition of White characters to give the show more “mainstream” appeal. If storylines involved actors of another race, it was because there was a believable reason for them to be there. Race was hardly ever a factor on the show, though Season 2’s “I’m Afraid of Americans” was about the fallout from a race riot. The emphasis on relationships and the recurrent theme of family as a buffer against the problems of the outside world helped “Soul Food” stand out. Whether it was Maxine babysitting for Bird and Lem’s son while the couple worked, or Kenny offering ex-con Lem a job at his company, it consistently trumpeted the importance of family. As the family’s highest earner, Teri was often called upon for financial support. She helped Bird open her salon and made the necessary repairs on the family home where Bird and Lem settled. It will be interesting to see what happens next. White family dramas are a staple of network television, yet a Black drama has never lasted more than a few episodes. Will the success of “Soul Food” on cable help bring a Black drama to network television? Or will another show come to cable and have a similar impact? “Soul Food”’s long and successful run has set the bar. Let’s hope that it will bring forth additional opportunities for Black writers, producers and actors to have an avenue to show
